The South Hardin boys golf team is set to begin the 2025-26 season with increased depth and a growing roster.

The Tigers graduated four players in the offseason but return with 17 golfers this spring, including eight freshmen.

As Head Coach Matt Thompson works to determine his varsity lineup, he says the added depth helps create internal competition.

“It’s nice to, if you only have seven or eight kids, you don’t have too many to fall back on,” says Thompson. “But if you can kind of create some competition amongst your own team to make everybody else improve, to make sure who’s going to be on varsity, it’s kind of nice to have that inner-squad competition to try and be the top six.”

With a schedule featuring seven triangular meets, Thompson says the Tigers will face consistent challenges in the North Iowa Cedar League.

“Lots of our meets are triangulars,” says Thompson. “You know, we’re hoping to, and our conference seems to be stacked every year. Denver is always good. I think Aplington-Parkersburg is always good. Grundy Center is always good. East Marshall’s got some good golfers. So, you know, kind of wherever we go, there’s always really good teams. So, and lots of our meets are triangulars. So we’re always trying to at least finish second, at worst.”

South Hardin opens the season April 7 in a triangular with Denver and Jesup at Willow Run Country Club in Denver.
