Two killed in Wright County crash Friday

Two people from Belmond were killed Friday evening in a crash near the intersection of Highway 69 and 200th Street in Wright County, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The accident occurred around 7:26 p.m. on April 3. Authorities say a 2000 Ford Ranger, driven by 65-year-old Michael Thomas Mickelson of Belmond, was traveling southbound on Highway 69 when he attempted an illegal U-turn.

During the maneuver, the pickup was struck by a southbound 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by 25-year-old McAin Alan Hefti of Dows.

Mickelson and his passenger, 71-year-old Ellen Kay Countryman, also of Belmond, were both pronounced dead at the scene. According to the report, Mickelson was wearing a seatbelt, while Countryman was not.

Hefti’s condition was not reported.

The Wright County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Belmond Fire Department, Belmond Police Department and EMS, assisted at the scene. Both vehicles were towed by Bonnstetter Towing.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
