Pappajohn entrepreneurial competition now accepting applications

The 2026 John Pappajohn Iowa Entrepreneurial Venture Competition is now accepting applications, offering $100,000 in cash prizes to early-stage Iowa startups.

The annual statewide competition aims to support new and growing businesses that plan to expand operations in Iowa while promoting entrepreneurship and awareness of available resources.

Eligible applicants include Iowa-based businesses that have been operating for four years or less or are not yet cash flow positive. The competition is open to a range of industries, including technology, biotechnology, agriculture, advanced manufacturing, engineering and education. Businesses must be registered in Iowa and intend to scale within the state.

First-round applications are due May 15, with participants notified by June 1 if they advance. Final awards will be announced Aug. 19 during a luncheon in Ames.

Winners will receive $40,000 for first place, $25,000 for second and $15,000 for third, with up to $20,000 in additional awards.

Since 2006, the competition has awarded $1.4 million to Iowa businesses. It is supported by the Iowa Economic Development Authority and led by Iowa’s Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Centers.
