
The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Directors approved its fiscal year 2027 budget during a hearing Thursday, setting a proposed tax rate of $13.15540 per $1,000 of taxable valuation.
No members of the public spoke during the budget hearing. The board later approved the budget as presented in a 5-0 vote.
During the regular meeting, board members discussed a resolution related to public school funding after hearing concerns from representatives of Iowa Strong. The group questioned why the district did not adopt a previously submitted resolution opposing the use of public funds for private schools. Board members expressed support for public education but said they would like to see increased accountability and oversight for private schools receiving public funding.
In other business, the board approved a middle school trip to Washington, D.C., during spring break 2028.
Superintendent Joe Nelson reported enrollment has remained steady and discussed bringing back the district’s cross country program, along with the end of a wrestling-sharing agreement with Belmond-Klemme starting in fall 2026.
The next meeting is scheduled for May 12 at 7 a.m.
