Law enforcement agencies across Iowa issued hundreds of citations during a recent distracted driving enforcement effort tied to Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau partnered with the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force and agencies statewide for the project, which ran April 6-10 as part of a national enforcement wave aimed at reducing distracted driving.

During the five-day period, officers issued 551 hands-free citations and 329 warnings, for a total of 880 violations.

Since enforcement efforts began Jan. 1, authorities have issued more than 3,600 citations and 3,100 warnings under Iowa’s hands-free driving law. The law restricts the use of electronic devices while driving to a single touch unless the device is operated in a hands-free mode.

Officials say the law has played a role in reducing traffic fatalities, with Iowa recording a historic low number of deaths in 2025.
