It is National Work Zone Awareness Week, and the Iowa Department of Transportation is urging drivers to take extra care in construction zones.
Observed April 20–24, this year’s theme, “Safe actions save lives,” highlights the shared responsibility of protecting road workers and motorists. The DOT reports 6,639 work zone crashes in Iowa from 2016 through 2025, including 67 fatal crashes that resulted in 73 deaths. Speeding contributed to more than 3,000 of those incidents, while following too closely was the leading cause.
In 2025, Iowa recorded 741 work zone crashes, with most occurring during daylight hours and clear weather conditions.
The DOT and Iowa State Patrol will promote safety throughout the week through outreach and enforcement. Drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert and follow posted signs in work zones.
