The North Central Conference held its girls conference track meet Thursday night in Webster City, where two area athletes won conference championships.

Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Maren Subbert entered the meet leading the conference in the discus with a throw of 130 feet, 9 inches. She topped her personal best with a throw of 132-10 to win the conference title. Subbert says the conference competition helped drive her.

“And discus, we had a PR, which I was not expecting, really, so there was good competition there because Reagan Haynes from Algona PR’d a couple times and met my state mark I started off with, so I knew I had to get past that,” says Subbert. “But it was a really good day, and I felt good.”

Iowa Falls-Alden’s Izzy Janssen also won a conference championship in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.24 seconds. Janssen says the next step is continuing to build speed, both individually in the hurdles and with her distance medley relay team.

“I think, really, I just need to build up more speed and keep my speed up,” Janssen says. “I just need to gain as much speed as I can before next week, and so hopefully I can drop my time lower. And with the DMED, too, I think we all just need to run our best at the qualifying meet, and hopefully something great happens.”

Other area top performers included Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Madison Heilskov, who finished second in the high jump at 5 feet, surpassing her previous best of 4-10.

In the girls team standings, Hampton-Dumont-CAL finished fifth with 52 points, Iowa Falls-Alden was seventh with 39 points, and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows was ninth with 15 points.

The boys North Central Conference track meet was held Thursday in Algona. Iowa Falls-Alden won the 4×200-meter relay in 1:32.10. The Cadets also finished second in the 4×800 relay in 8:50.34, the 1600 sprint medley relay in 3:55.82 and the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle relay in 1:04.30.

Individually, Iowa Falls-Alden’s Andrew Herrin finished second in the 3200 in 10:15.08. Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Aaden Keehn was second in the 110 hurdles in 15.07 seconds.

In the boys team standings, Iowa Falls-Alden finished third with 113 points, Hampton-Dumont-CAL was sixth with 59, and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows was eighth with 38.

The teams will return to action Thursday for state qualifying meets. Hampton-Dumont-CAL will compete at Clear Lake, while Iowa Falls-Alden and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows will head to Roland-Story.
