The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau will partner with law enforcement agencies across Iowa for a seat belt-focused enforcement campaign beginning Monday.
The Click It or Ticket campaign, part of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration effort, will run from May 18 through May 31.
Officials say seat belts remain the best defense against serious injury in a crash. In 2025, 121 people killed in Iowa traffic crashes were not wearing a seat belt. Unrestrained occupants accounted for 47% of all traffic fatalities in the state last year.
Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes says the goal is to encourage drivers and passengers to buckle up consistently, no matter the type of vehicle, where they are sitting or what type of road they are traveling on.
The bureau works with city, county, state and local organizations to reduce deaths and injuries on Iowa roads through federally funded grants.
