The Hampton-Dumont-CAL track and field teams automatically qualified three events for state following Thursday’s Class 3A qualifying meet in Clear Lake.
Junior Beau Morton turned in a standout performance for the Bulldog boys team, sweeping both throwing events. Morton claimed the shot put title with a school-record throw of 59 feet, 2 inches and followed it up with another first-place finish in the discus at 147-08, automatically qualifying for state in both events.
“It was great. It was a good feeling,” Morton says. “Well first, yeah, in the ring, I mean, everything was smooth. Everything just felt great. I mean, it came off my hand just perfect. I mean, and I don’t know, I was kind of speechless. I knew I could get that school record, but I didn’t think I would really blow it out of the water like that. But I’m just overall happy and just grateful. And yeah, it just felt really good. You now lot of the fans watching, so I’m just happy that I could hit it here at the district meet and prove that I was able to hit the school record.”
On the girls side, junior Maren Subbert earned an automatic state berth in the discus. Subbert posted a throw of 134-0 to place second overall and secure her spot at state.
“I mean it feels good, it always feels good to qualify for state so but it was good especially with the ups and the downs that I’ve had this season,” Subbert says. “So I knew that the Decorah girls were gonna be tricky I knew that they were gonna be probably my best competition here because I saw them at Drake and that the girl who beat me today had already beaten me at Drake so I knew it was gonna be pretty tight and I had to be on my best game today if I really wanted to throw well.”
The Iowa State Track and Field Championships are scheduled for May 21-23 in Des Moines.
