A Webster City teen is heading to the Iowa State Fair this month to take part in a decades-old tradition that supports Iowa families. Abby Peterson has been selected to show her steer, Milo, at this year’s Governor’s Charity Steer Show on August 15th.
The event, hosted by Gov. Kim Reynolds and coordinated by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council, will feature 25 steers, with Reynolds showing one for the final time as governor. All proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, which operate homes in Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City.
Peterson, a Webster City High School graduate headed to Iowa State University, has shown cattle for ten years and was involved in 4-H, FFA, and cross country. She’s also the Franklin County Beef Queen. For Peterson, the cause is personal: both of her siblings were born prematurely, and her family stayed at a Ronald McDonald House during that time.
She’ll be joined in the ring by celebrity showman Steve Sukup, chairman of Sukup Manufacturing. The show has raised more than 6 million dollars since 1983, including a record 569,000 dollars last year. It takes place at Pioneer Pavilion at 4:30 p.m., followed by a live auction.
