The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has opened registration for its fall hunter education courses.
The department offers more than 200 courses each year, including traditional classroom instruction and hybrid courses that combine online learning with an in-person field day. Students age 18 and older may complete the certification process entirely online without attending a field day.
Hunter education introduces students to firearm safety and other skills associated with hunting and outdoor recreation. The program is required for anyone born after Jan. 1, 1972, who plans to purchase an Iowa hunting license.
Young hunters are not required to complete the course until they turn 16 and need to purchase a hunting license.
In-person courses often fill quickly during the fall, and prospective hunters are encouraged to check the Iowa DNR website regularly for openings in their area.
