The North Iowa Cedar League will be well-represented at the IHSAA Class 2A State Golf Championship Meet at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo. Aplington-Parkersburg and Grundy Center will locally represent the league, along with Columbus Catholic and East Marshall.
AP coach Gary Flanigan says the regular season prepared them to be successful at the state meet.
“Every time we had a dual or a conference meet or an invite, we’re playing Grundy center, Waterloo Columbus, East Marshall, they all qualified for state,” Flanigan says. “So our NICL conference is going to be well-represented. And I think that’s part of our success, quite honestly, that we know what it takes to beat the best teams in the state. Cause we’re playing Grundy and we’re playing Columbus. So our kids know what they need to shoot. And I think having to be focused all that time has really helped us prepare for this as well.”
The Falcons qualified by placing second with 323 strokes at the district meet at Lake Mills, led by Brandon Hartbarger’s 77 strokes for third place.
A state tournament regular, Grundy Center qualified by placing second with 323 strokes at the district meet at South Hills Golf Course.
“Our goals from year to year basically are the same three: win our own invitational, win the conference meet, and then play on the last day of the state tournament,” Head Coach Dennis Dirks says. “And they will play on the last day of state tournament. Where we’ll finish is yet to be determined. There’s some good teams there. You talk about AP, you talk about Pella Christian, you talk about Columbus. There’s some teams that are quality teams there. When you look at the field this year, there’s some teams I don’t think that ever been to the state meet. And then there’s some teams that are year to year, you find their name in the lineup.”
The tournament will be two days of 18 holes each. Tuesday’s action will start at 10:30 a.m., and Wednesday’s tee times will be at 9:00 a.m.
