Iowa State Senator Dennis Guth of Klemme is disappointed in Governor Kim Reynolds vetoing the bill that would have placed restrictions on Summit Carbon Solutions in constructing their proposed pipeline across the state.
Guth was one of the GOP senators that supported the bill.
“I think that she has decided that promoting our economy and stimulating ethanol is a very important thing, more important than protecting landowners’ property rights. So that’s why I was disappointed.”
Guth doubts a special session will be held in an attempt to override the governor’s veto.
“Probably we’re just going to have to wait until next year. There’s not much else that we can do this year. We’ll keep researching. We’ll keep talking to constituents and seeing if there’s any new ideas out there. 639 that the governor did not sign is not perfect, but it did a lot of good things, set us in the right direction. Could have been something that we could have corrected next session if we’d have had something in place, if we needed to narrow down some of the interveners or something like that. But now we have to start from scratch again.”
The bill would have prohibited the renewal of permits for a carbon dioxide pipeline, limited the use of such a pipeline to 25-years, and significantly increased the insurance coverage requirements for the pipeline company.
