
As part of Franklin County National Night Out on Tuesday in Hampton, Franklin County Family Focus gave away over 200 backpacks of school supplies to local families. ISU Extension and Outreach Program Coordinator Lili Velasco on different organizations that step up to help.
“It is a very popular event and it is something that we’re kind of known for now, for giving out the free backpacks,” says Velasco. “The agencies that we have helping are La Luz Centro Cultural, we also have Andrea with Crisis Intervention Services, we have people from the school, and we have somebody coming from Clarion with Building Families. We just have all kinds of help with this event.”
Each backpack included a student’s choice of notebooks, folders, pencils and markers. Velasco on the number of backpacks prepared for back to school this year.
“Last year we gave away 233 backpacks. This year we thought our community might need more this year,” says Velasco. “We ended up getting 300 backpacks to give away. Whatever we don’t give away, we will be giving it away at other back to school events.”
Remaining backpacks will be given away at La Luz Centro Cultural Back to School Night on August 15th, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
