The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent scam involving fake phone calls from someone claiming to be law enforcement. According to a release from Sheriff David Hepperly, several citizens have reported receiving calls from an individual posing as a lieutenant with the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office. The caller tells the person they’ve missed jury duty and are at risk of being arrested unless they provide personal information.

Authorities stress that this is a scam and not a legitimate call from the sheriff’s office. Residents are urged not to give out any personal information over the phone and to report suspicious calls to their local law enforcement agency.

The public is reminded that real officers will never demand personal information over the phone or threaten arrest in this manner.
