Mason City is officially home to Iowa’s first world-class mountain bike park. City leaders held a ribbon cutting Thursday morning (Aug. 21) for the new Prairie Rock Trails Bike Park, a 10-acre facility located at 1500 Elm Drive.
Currently the initial phase of the project is open which features a pump track, “kiddy track” and a shelter. Subsequent phases will feature additional trails that will open later this year. Mayor Bill Schickel says “This project is a bold step forward in our mission to become the outdoor recreation capital of the Midwest. Prairie Rock Trails puts Mason City on the map for cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts across the country.”
The project was made possible through a $4.5 million Destination Iowa grant which is a statewide initiative aimed at boosting tourism and enhancing quality of life.
