The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services says the ongoing federal government shutdown could delay or halt the issuance of November benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP.
That uncertainty could affect more than 131,000 Iowa households that rely on SNAP each month for groceries and other essentials.
Local food banks and pantries are already preparing to meet an expected rise in demand. Community members are encouraged to help by donating nonperishable food items such as canned vegetables, pasta and cereal, or by contributing financially.
Officials say that as federal assistance remains uncertain, local resources will play a critical role in ensuring Iowans do not go hungry in the weeks ahead.
