Heightened Holiday Patrols Aim to Reduce Thanksgiving Crashes

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement agencies across Iowa to promote safe travel during the Thanksgiving holiday season.

Drivers can expect to see an increased police presence on roadways through Nov. 30. Officials say the goal is to reduce crashes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

During Thanksgiving week in 2024, Iowa recorded 17 fatal or serious injury crashes, including five involving people who were not wearing seat belts. The GTSB says many of those injuries could have been prevented.

The bureau also reminds motorists that “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving,” and that impaired driving includes alcohol and drugs. Drivers are urged to plan ahead and arrange a sober ride.

The GTSB works with state and local agencies on federally funded programs aimed at reducing roadway fatalities and injuries.
