The West Fork girls basketball team will tip off a new season by hosting North Iowa in a Top of Iowa Conference East matchup on Tuesday. This will be the fifth straight season the teams have met before Thanksgiving break.
West Fork went 20-4 last season and reached a Class 2A regional final. The Warhawks return two everyday rotation players from last season, including senior Brylee Dickman, junior Evie Hitzhusen. Dickman averaged six points and four rebounds per game last season. Hitzhusen averaged 3.7 points and tracked down 2.1 steals per game. Head Coach Rodney Huber.
“I think North Iowa will be much improved this year. They have a new coach. They have some young players that have been there for a little while now and played. They’re definitely not somebody we can overlook. Every game is a learning opportunity for us this year,” says Huber. “We’re trying to build for the future. We’re trying to be our best after Christmas break and into district play. That’s always the goal, first and foremost. You want to win those early season games before Christmas break and all that. Really, it’s about learning, the process and making sure you’re doing the right things everyday.”
North Iowa went 3-20 last season. The Bison return their top two scorers and rebounders from last year’s squad. Junior Bella Lanfeld led the team with 8.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Junior Emma Eichenberger averaged 7.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season.
West Fork won last year’s meeting 59-31 in Buffalo Center.
The tip off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. in Sheffield.
