Former Des Moines schools Superintendent Ian Roberts is expected to enter a plea deal in his federal criminal case, according to court records.

Roberts resigned Sept. 30 after he was arrested while authorities say he attempted to flee from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Federal prosecutors have said Roberts is a native of Guyana and was not a U.S. citizen at the time he was hired in 2023 to lead Iowa’s largest school district.

Court filings indicate Roberts was not legally authorized to work in the United States when he was employed by the district.

A hearing on the proposed plea agreement is scheduled for next Thursday in federal court.
