Despite bitterly cold temperatures expected across Iowa this weekend, Coaches vs. Cancer events in Franklin County will move forward Saturday with a modified schedule.

The fundraiser will take place at West Fork High School in Sheffield, where West Fork will host Hampton-Dumont-CAL in varsity-only basketball games starting at 3:00 p.m.

The changes were made in response to forecast wind chills ranging from 15 to 25 below zero. Sheri Bogue, the event chair for Coaches vs. Cancer in Franklin County, tells RadioOnTheGo News that even with the frigid conditions, the two rival schools are coming together to compete for a cause bigger than basketball.

“It’s really important to fight this battle of cancer and it’s important to show that as a community we’re supportive in both communities supporting the one cause to do our best to find a cure for cancer.”

Denise Conrad, a staff partner with the American Cancer Society, says events, like Coaches vs. Cancer, are about more than fundraising, focusing just as much on raising awareness and supporting those impacted by cancer.

“We want to ensure everybody is aware of early detection, the screenings they need to get, and where to go if they are diagnosed with cancer. And when you get two communities like this, two school districts coming together and fighting for one cause, there is nothing better than that because the bond is so strong and they know they’re coming together to help everybody in their community.”

The games begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday and will air on 99 The Wave. There will be a bucket run between the girls and boys basketball games in addition to a silent auction, which will be open through halftime of the boys’ game. The free-will donation soup supper is postponed to February 6th in Sheffield. More information can be found here.
