Algona man charged with killing an Algona police officer
A 43-year-old Algona man has been charged with first degree murder for allegedly killing an Algona police officer Wednesday night. Algona Police Officer 33-year-old Kevin Cram was on patrol duty about 8 o’clock Wednesday night when he was made aware of an active arrest warrant for Kyle Ricke. The arrest warrant was from Palo Alto County for harassment.
Cram knew of a possible location for Ricke and headed to that area. Cram was in the 11-hundred block of South Minnesota Street in Algona when he observed Ricke. After advising Ricke he was going to be placed under arrest, Ricke shot Cram. Cram later died at the hospital in Algona.
Ricke was located and arrested near Sleepy Eye, Minnesota at 11:50pm, and will be extradited at a later date. An autopsy will be performed by the state medical examiner’s office.
Cram was a 10-year veteran of Iowa law enforcement, serving for the Nora Springs Police Department from 2013-15 and the Algona PD from 2015-23.
