Cowgirls Track & Field off to high flying start

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Girls Track and Field is off to a solid beginning to the 2023 season through three competitions.

The Cowgirls have so far been involved in the Dickinson Relays and Wartburg HS Invitational, and most recently the North Iowa Indoor Championships, like several other local area teams. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Girls Track and Field Head Coach Monty Harker says the strength of the team comes in the vertical events.

“We don't have a very big team but we have a good group of three hurdlers that are back that also do very well in the high jump and long jump areas. Especially those three seniors are doing very well. Outstanding sophomore Makayla Beisel, she’s already gone five three in the high jump and is running the hurdles very good as well.”

Sophomore Makayla Beisel (bi-sowl) earned first place in last week's North Iowa Indoor in the Girls 200m Hurdles (31.59s). Beisel finished a one-hundredth of a second behind senior Kennedy Trca (Tur-Shuh) in the Girls 60m Hurdles (10.27s and 10.28s). Coach Harker says it’s great to see Trca get back to her full capabilities.

“She’s just gotta keep her speed up, she’s just trying to work… to getting back to running shape since she’s been active in all her other sports. It was nice to see her finally run normal and fast, which is what she is.”

Cowgirl seniors Makenna and Clarrisa Hasty (hay-stee) also placed well in the North Iowa Indoor, finishing sixth and seventh in the Girls 200m (29.51s and 29.53s).

“They’re twins, and there is a great competition between them, just give you all every practice. Clarrisa did very well in the hurdles last year for our Shuttle Hurdle, qualified for state, she’s gotten even faster in the hurdles this year. I'm excited to see what she can run. Makenna had to be off [last year], she had an operation that caused her to miss the entire season last year, whereas the year before she had qualified for state jumping over sixteen in the long jump.”

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Girls Track and Field is back in the running lanes April 6, at the Lady Eagle Relays in  Eagle Grove.
