Grundy Center hosting Early Bird Coed Tuesday

The Grundy Center track & field teams will host a coed meet Tuesday. It’ll be the first outdoor action of the season for some of the attending teams after severe weather altered last week’s schedule.

It’ll be a mix of North Iowa Cedar League and out-of-conference opponents. Grundy Center boys head coach Chris Conger says local opponents provide great competition to prepare for the postseason.

"We're going to see a lot of the area NICL schools, and that's terrific competition," Conger says. "Being able to balance the Cedar Valley and then get out there a little bit was important to our schedule. It leads us to be our best come May."

The Spartans will enter the meet as likely favorites to win the distance races and a few relays.

The Aplington-Parkersburg boys will begin their season as an experienced team. Head Coach Mark Haren says it’s a deep group with hopes for a strong season.

"There's so many guys back," Haren says. "The seniors, Jack Eddy, Kaden Huttinger, Joe Johnson, Aidan Junker, Drew Ogle, Kye Rottinghaus, Adam Schipper, Evan Sheesley, Carson Troyna, Jesse Washington, all guys that have been varsity competitors for three years. I think we've got a chance to be really good this year when you throw them in with juniors like Devin Davis, Nick Neuroth, Kael Stotler, David Ritchie, this is year three for them doing varsity stuff. I know there's a lot of optimism coming into the season."

It’ll be the first outdoor meet for Aplington-Parkersburg after a few student-athletes competed at indoor meets.

Other schools at the meet include AGWSR, Collins-Maxwell, Colo-Nesco, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Hudson, Waterloo Christian and Waterloo West. Action begins at 4:30 p.m. in Grundy Center.
