AP/DNH seeking playoff upset at Webster City Monday

The AP/DNH boys soccer team will look to pull off an upset win over #4 (2A) Webster City in Monday’s substate semifinal.

The 10-7 United have picked up steam since the start of May, and gained momentum with a 7-1 win over New Hampton in last week’s playoff opener. The offense was clicking, led by two goals apiece by Walker Weedman and Ty Luhring. While the team has found its rhythm, Head Coach Perry Bernard says the Lynx will present a different kind of challenge.

"We have to be on our top game," Bernard says. "It's going to be a tough game. We've got to clean up some things in practice, work on speeding up our play, and we'll see how it goes."

Webster City begins the playoffs after earning a first round bye that comes with the #1 seed in the substate. At 12-1 overall, the Lynx have won 11 straight. Eddy Fuentes and Eduardo Perez lead the team with 21 and 18 goals. United goalkeeper Adrian Huisman says his team has what it takes to pull off the upset.

"It's going to take a lot of determination and will to want to win," Huisman says. "They're a very good team, and it's going to take everything to beat them, but I think we can very well do it."

The winner will face either Hampton-Dumont-CAL or Clear Lake in Wednesday’s substate final.

Monday’s game will air on 99 The Wave. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:20, and the opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:30.
