Grundy Center takes title, Warhawks runner-up at boys state golf

The Grundy Center boys golf team ran away with the 2023 Class 2A state golf championship Tuesday at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames. The Spartans completed the two-day, 36-hole tournament with 597 strokes, well ahead of second place Beckman Catholic’s 611.
Spartan freshman Judd Jirovsky dominated individually, taking the title with 131 strokes, the lowest ever score in a 36-hole state championship tournament.
It was the school’s second team championship of the school year, after the football team won the Class A title.
In the Class 1A tournament at Ames Golf & Country Club, West Fork finished in second place with a 655, behind champion Hillcrest Academy’s 650. AGWSR finished 9th with a 692. Individually, North Butler sophomore Nolan Reser tied for fifth place with a 154. West Fork junior Sage Suntken tied for seventh with a 156. AGWSR’s highest finisher was junior Gabe Nederhoff, who tied for 26th with a 169.
At the Class 3A meet at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames, Hampton-Dumont-CAL senior Michael Showalter tied for 50th place with a 180.
