AGWSR Softball playing three straight this week

It’s a busy week for the AGWSR softball team, with games scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Coming off a 5-24 season last year, the Cougars are off to a much better start at 3-3. Among the wins is an upset of #15 (1A) Saint Ansgar in Saturday's Newman Catholic tournament in Mason City. After losing just one senior from last year’s roster, first-year head coach Brock Holmgaard says his team is on the brink of being very successful.

"We've got to improve our baserunning," Holmgaard says. "We're making some mistakes there. We're going to have to start hitting the ball more. We haven't gotten into that groove yet, but we're getting close to being a really good team. That's exciting to me. Also, if we can limit our errors, do the little things, it'll be a good season for us."

As a team, the Cougars are hitting .237 and have only three extra base hits. Senior Sidney Schafer is back for her third season as the starting pitcher, and has a much-improved ERA of 1.50. She’s recorded 15 strikeouts and issued only three walks in 28 innings of work.

The Cougars will enjoy two out of three at home this week, hosting Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Jesup on Tuesday and Thursday, and traveling to Columbus Catholic on Wednesday. Holmgaard says the week of games will test his team.

"Jesup is always good. Columbus is good. Hampton-Dumont-CAL is always tough, they're a big school. I know their numbers are down a little bit, but nine girls is all you need to play. We're going to have to be ready to play every night this week."

Each game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
