Spartan Softball to feature revamped pitching staff

The Grundy Center softball team is off to a 2-4 start to the season, and is working through the early stage of the season with a different approach in the pitching circle. After losing a Division III talent in Emma Beck to graduation last year, the Spartans have had three different starters this year.

Head Coach Andy Lebo says a more diverse pitching staff has been serviceable so far.

"We've got a junior with Lucy Lebo, a freshman with Allison Koch, and three eighth graders we've brought up," Lebo says. "We're in a really good position where I've got five girls that can throw. We're treating it by commitee, like a baseball staff would, making sure we don't burn anyone up early. We don't have that dominant one we had last year, but not many do. All in all, we've been throwing strikes. As long as we continue to throw strikes, field the ball and put the ball in play, we'll be very, very competitive."

Junior Lucy Lebo has the post experience among returning pitchers. Her 17 innings of work this year are nearly half of her total innings last year. Freshman Allison Koch is back after appearing in three games last year. Eighth graders Maddy Hendershot and Ava Mundt round out the staff. On the season, they’ve recorded 38 strikeouts and 41 walks while giving up 37 hits with a 6.21 ERA.

After dropping both games of a doubleheader to #15 (2A) South Hardin Tuesday, the Spartans will finish the week by hosting Wapsie Valley Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
