Grundy Center earns title in loaded AP Volleyball Tournament field
The #3 (2A) Grundy Center volleyball team earned the title at Saturday’s Aplington-Parkersburg tournament, which included a loaded field of teams. Other teams included #1 (1A) Ankeny Christian, #7 (1A) AGWSR, #5 (2A) Denver, Nashua-Plainfield, #14 (2A) Wapsie Valley, #8 (3A) West Delaware and the #12 (2A) Falcons.

In pool play, the Spartans suffered their first loss of the year, a 2-1 decision to Denver where the deciding set was won 20-18. Grundy Center responded with 2-0 sweeps of Ankeny Christian and AGWSR, and took first place in the pool on tie breaking procedures.
In bracket play, the Spartans beat Ankeny Christian 2-1, and avenged the loss to Denver by beating the Cyclones 2-0.
AGWSR went 0-3 in pool play. Along with the loss to the Spartans, they fell 2-1 to Ankeny Christian and 2-0 to Denver.
The Falcons went 2-1 in pool play. They earned 2-0 wins over Nashua-Plainfield and West Delaware, and fell 2-1 to Wapsie Valley. In bracket play, the Falcons lost to Ankeny Christian 2-0.
All three local teams will return to action Tuesday. The 10-3 Falcons will host Denver. The 4-9 Cougars will host East Marshall. The 19-1 Spartans will join #1 (2A) Dike-New Hartford at a triangular at #4 (2A) Sumner-Fredericksburg, matches that’ll air on 99 The Wave.
