Grundy Center boys highlight local performers at Rich Engle Classic

Grundy Center and Dike-New Hartford were among a loaded field of cross country teams at Thursday’s Rich Engle Classic in Cedar Falls.

The Spartan boys took ninth place, led by the duo of #18 (1A) Kaden Lynch and #7 (1A) Emerson Vokes, who finished ninth and 10th. Lynch says it’s been a fun season competing alongside Vokes, and they’ve helped put the program on the map.

"It's so much more fun to have people to do it with," Lynch says. "Emerson put in the work over the summer. I'm nor surprised at all that he's running the times he's running. Going in a duo is a lot more fun than just being one man. A lot of people say, 'Are you that 1A duo from Grundy?' It's a pretty fun feeling."

Lynch finished in 16:44.0 while Vokes was right behind at 16:46.6.

The Dike-New Hartford boys placed 17th. Mats Eskevik was the top finisher in 101st place.

The Grundy Center and Dike-New Hartford girls tied for 14th place. Izzy Houts led the Wolverines with a 31st place finish, while Grace Storjohann led the Spartans by placing 43rd.

Dike-New Hartford will return to action Monday, September 18 at Denver. Grundy Center’s next race will be at home on Thursday, September 21.
