AGWSR battling Nashua-Plainfield for Homecoming
The AGWSR football team will continue district play by hosting #8 (A) Nashua-Plainfield for its Homecoming game Friday.
The Cougars are 1-2 overall and 1-1 in district play after a 34-18 loss at North Tama last week. Head Coach James Koop says his team was beaten in the trenches due to inconsistency, a point that was hammered in this week’s film study.
"We were showing them how bad the bad looked, and we would also show them how good the good looked," Koop says. The focus this week has been, 1. We've got to show more grit, regardless of how the plays are going, whether they're going our way or not, we've got to fight to the bitter end. 2. Especially against this Nashua-Plainfield team, which I said preseason is probably the second best team in our district to Wapsie Valley, we have to be consistent."
The Cougars amassed 188 rushing yards, but squandered scoring opportunities by committing three turnovers.
Nashua-Plainfield cracked the rankings this week after a 3-0 start. A Wing-T rushing attack is led by Tutus Evans and Aiden Gelner. As a team, the Huskies have the third-most rushing yards in Class A, and Gelner’s 7.2 yards per carry are the fourth-most in Class A. Koop says a key to defending the offense is discipline up front.
"If your line play is better than theirs, and we're following the pulling guards or disrupting the pulling guards getting outside, and if our outside linebackers, strong safeties and corners are flying to the football and hitting people, you can stop their offense. Once you stop Buck Sweep, then they're going to run fullback trap or Iso. They're going to do those plays off of that. We have to be careful that we do those things consistently. We also have to be ready for their passes. They don't have a lot of passing, but when they do, they're very efficient and successful in what they're completing."
Kaden Abbas leads the Cougar rushing attack. His 475 yards are the fourth-most in Class A, and 7.1 yards per carry are the fifth best in A.
The game will air on 99 The Wave. The Roling Ford Road to the Dome Warmup Show will begin at 6:15 p.m., followed by the opening kickoff at 7:00.
