Cowboys Football Wins District Opener Over G-H-V Friday Night
The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team ended two game losing slide and won its district opener 41-6 over Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on Friday night in Clarion. It was the program’s first win over G-H-V since 2014.
The Cowboys found their rhythm in the first half scoring three touchdowns and allowing only one touchdown by the Cardinals, as the Cowboys took a 21-6 lead into halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, the Cowboys pulled away in the fourth quarter scoring three more touchdowns to finish a great home victory. Head Coach Caleb Vogel says the Cowboys win was made possible by a great week of practice being translated to gameday.
"We practiced hard, we prepared hard, the kids are flying around having fun during practice and that showed last night," says Vogel. "I couldn't be more thankful for the guys, how hard they worked and there's times where we did face adversity and we were able to overcome that. We got it done on both ends of the ball and special teams. My assistant coaches did a great job, Offensive Coordinator Coach Scheffel, he did a great job calling plays. It was just a great team win all-around, so I was just ver thankful for that."
The Cowboys were led by senior running back Diego Gonzalez with 25 carries for 199 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and 16 receiving yards and a touchdown. Senior quarterback Carson Nesheim had 81 passing yards, two touchdowns and 41 rushing yards. Senior back Mason Allen and freshman back Charlie Campbell each added a rushing touchdown, and senior wideout Colin Kirstein had a receiving touchdown. Defensively, freshman defensive back Huxley Lingenfelter was the leading tackler with 5.5 total tackles and Kirstein had three interceptions.
The Cowboys improve to 2-2 and will be at Estherville-Lincoln Central in district play on Friday.
