AGWSR to face South Tama in non-conference volleyball

The #8 (1A) AGWSR volleyball team will travel to South Tama for a rare non-conference match Thursday.

The Cougars are 8-13, and have lost four of their last five matches after an 0-2 outing in Tuesday’s home triangular. However, of Tuesday’s four sets, three were decided by two points. Head Coach Jill Smith says the record isn’t impressive, but her team has and will continue to be tested by elite competition.

"Similar to last year, I feel like our record is a little bit deceiving," Smith says. "Using this as a jumping board to move forward in our season, because our schedule doesn't get any easier. We continue to see tough teams, ranked teams in a variety of classes. Hopefully we continue to battle and come out on top in some of those close matches."

While the Cougars will look for cleaner attacks, the serving has been a strength, having connected on 93 percent of serves.

South Tama is 9-11 after being swept at Grinnell Tuesday. Their 82 percent serve efficiency is the third lowest in Class 3A, meaning the Cougars will hope to take advantage of errors.

The Cougars won last year’s meeting 3-0. Action will begin at 7:30 p.m.
