Spartan Football taking on Columbus in Thursday night football
The #1 (1A) Grundy Center football team will play its first of two Thursday games this week when they travel to Columbus Catholic for a district clash.
The 4-0 Spartans are 1-0 in district play after taking care of business 49-0 at East Marshall last week, a game where every member of the team played. Quarterback Colin Gordon continues to lead the team with 788 all-purpose yards, with seven touchdown passes and one interception. The defense has been stout, and has given up less than five points per game.
The Sailors are 3-1 and 1-0 in district play. Grundy Center Head Coach Travis Zajac expects an intense environment in a battle between two quality teams.
"It's going to be an alive atmosphere there," Zajac says. "It's probably going to have a playoff feel to it. They think they've got a pretty good team, and we think we have a pretty good team. It'll be a very physical contest. Looking forward to bringing our kids there and competing. They're going to present some issues for us. They're probably going to be the best team we've faced up to this point. We'll have a good plan in place. The onus this week is mental preparation, to be ready to go on Thursday as opposed to a Friday."
Columbus defeated Hudson 42-18 in last week’s district opener, where quarterback Carter Lockert was dominant by going 15/20 passing with four touchdowns and one interception. Parker Kjeldsen rushed for 190 yards and a score. A high-powered offense averages 40 points per game.
It’ll be the first ever meeting between the teams. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
