The #7 (2A) West Fork softball team soared to an early lead and held off a late comeback by Iowa Falls-Alden for a 6-5 win, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ.

The Warhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as JoAnna Wallace launched a two run home run to left field. The Warhawks added a run in the second inning to go up 3-0, on a fielding error by the Cadets that allowed Aizley Winfrey to round third and score. The Warhawks added three insurance runs in the fifth inning for a 6-0 lead. The runs were driven in on a pair of big swings by Libby Trewin with a two run home run to the scoreboard in right and Brooke Rother with a solo shot to left. The Cadets rallied back, plating four runs in the sixth, on an RBI single apiece by Cidni Phipps and Addy Vanderloop, and runs scored on a fielder choice and a Warhawks error. The Cadets got to within a run in the seventh at a 6-5 deficit and had the tying run 90 feet away but were prevented from driving in the equalizer.

West Fork was led by JoAnna Wallace who went 3-3 with two stolen bases and two RBIs. Libby Trewin earned her second win of the season, pitching a complete game with 15 strikeouts, and added two RBIs at the plate.

Warhawk Senior JoAnna Wallace on a locked in night at the plate and being a senior leader.

“I think it was pretty cool because I did almost the same thing the other day. Being able to do it two games in a row, with it going as far as it did and as high as it did was just amazing to me. I was making sure I stayed out of my head because after I hit a home run I usually just get in my head really bad. I was trying not to do that. I was going to be happy with whatever I could get,” says Wallace. “It’s super important to me because I always looked up to the seniors when I was starting in eighth grade. I find it very important for the younger people to have somebody to look up to. I want to be one of those people they can look up to.”

Iowa Falls-Alden was led by Vada Campbell who went 2-2 with a pair of singles and Isabelle Janssen who went 2-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Cadets Head Coach Emily Banken on the team’s rally to get back in the game.

“You might as well jump in right away and face a tough competitor like we did tonight. I was excited to see how the girls actually stepped up and competed with them,” says Banken. “I hope that they can take some of the energy that they had in their little comeback tonight and apply it to Friday.”

West Fork (2-0) will host Northwood-Kensett on Friday. Iowa Falls-Alden (0-1) will host Algona on Friday.
