The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball team was outlasted by Bishop Garrigan 5-2 Thursday at Target Field, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ.
After coming up empty with the bases loaded in the first inning, the Cowboys took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Kohen Langfitt RBI groundout to drive home Logan Legleiter. The Golden Bears answered in the bottom of the inning, but Ethan Hasty doubled to drive home Jacob Ruba in the top of the third. CGD led 2-1 for the next two innings, but Bishop Garrigan took advantage of some errors in the late innings. Carter Schwab put the Bears in front on a double that drove in two runs in the fifth, part of a three-run inning. They finished it off with another in the sixth.
“I really enjoyed how we hit the ball today,” Head Coach Ryan Nail says. “We really put some power into the ball. Got a few doubles out there. Came up with some clutch hits, had some good base running. For the most part, our fielding was really good. The runs they had, their three-run inning, that was really the difference in the game. They had some guys up there and they crushed the ball. Big ballpark, and hit it hard and moved runners around. I think we gave up a couple triples that was the deciding factor. But those are the games you like to play. A couple things go your way, you win them. A couple things don’t go your way, you lose them. And that’s how baseball should be played.”
Tristan Kakacek had two hits. Jacob Ruba pitched the first four innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Nail on the opportunity to play in a Major League Baseball stadium.
“It’s kind of a, hopefully not an opportunity of a lifetime, but right now it is. We enjoyed a whole day, brought a lot of kids up here to Minneapolis, some who haven’t probably been here before and some who might not come back again. We were able to enjoy a good majority of the Twins game. We got ready, walked around the stadium a little bit, took some of that stuff in, and we were lucky enough, everyone saw the field in one way or another today.”
The Cowboys will return to action Monday by hosting Clear Lake for a North Central Conference doubleheader.
