The Belmond-Klemme baseball team has crossed the midway point of its season, and is set to play a rare two game week, at Lake Mills on Wednesday and hosting county rival Eagle Grove on Friday.
The Broncos earned their first two wins of the season during their last five games. Their wins came against Nashua-Plainfield on June 5 and Colo-Nesco on June 13.
Head Coach Cory Yoder on important lessons the team is learning as the season progresses.
“We just gotta keep working on our hitting, pitching and things will come along great, I think. The kids gotta be confident,” says Yoder. “Our kids never quit, which I’m super proud of them. We have got a lot of things to work on and our confidence is our big thing. We gotta learn to start the game and finish at the same time.”
The Broncos bats have received a lift from Coewhan Kelley with a .286 average and Parker Dougherty with a .244 average and team leading five RBIs. The Broncos pitching staff is working on decreasing a team ERA of 7.42. Carver Buchanan leads the staff with a 2.80 ERA in 10 innings on the mound.
Yoder on coaching different positions on doing their job.
“One game at a time. They’re gonna have to step up to the plate and take care of us. I told our kids you got to take care of our pitchers, if there’s a play to be made, make the play, you cannot put our pitchers in harm’s way. Then our pitchers got to take care of our infield. We’ll be ready to go this week, the kids should be fresh. We will be ready to go.”
First pitch is at 7:30 p.m. at Lake Mills (8-2) on Wednesday.
