Falcons win two at Belle Plaine Tuesday

The Aplington-Parkersburg summer sports teams each won at Belle Plaine Tuesday. The baseball team won 10-1 and the softball team won 13-5 in five innings.

In the softball game, the Falcons got on the board with three runs in the first, which the Plainsmen answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning. The consistent offense by AP continued with two runs in the third and one in the fourth. They busted the game open by taking advantage of errors and scoring seven in the fifth inning, ending the game early by the run margin rule. Head Coach Travis Walker says they’re still experimenting with lineups in games due to a lack of practice time.

“We’re just trying to move our pieces around, and we haven’t had a practice probably other than batting practice in eight or nine days, just because of five games last week and two right away this week,” Walker says. “It’s really tough throwing kids in spots that they’re not accustomed to playing, and we’re preparing them as best you can but hoping for the best.”

In the baseball game, the Plainsmen scored their only run in the first inning, which AP answered in the third. The Falcons scored one in the fifth, but created separation by an eight-run inning in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Sully Janssen was 2-3 with two RBIs and a solo home run. Benny Waller pitched 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts.

Both teams will return to NICL-Central action Thursday by hosting Columbus Catholic.
