In his latest newsletter, Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley, a Republican from New Hartford, outlined recent legislative efforts to reshape the state’s higher education system. A key focus was House File 856, which replaces Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives with MEI—Merit, Excellence, and Intelligence. The new law prohibits public colleges and universities from using state funds to support DEI offices or programs.
Grassley noted that the Iowa Board of Regents met virtually on July 30 to address compliance with the law, following concerns involving a University of Iowa employee. The university is working with the Attorney General’s office to review the situation.
The Regents delayed a vote on a proposed policy limiting DEI and Critical Race Theory in required coursework, planning a special meeting in August for further discussion.
Grassley also highlighted the creation of a new House Higher Education Committee aimed at improving academic quality, lowering costs, and promoting intellectual diversity.
