A ribbon cutting ceremony took place Monday to signify the opening of a new competition gym at Hampton-Dumont-CAL. Construction was completed last week, and Activities Director Lance Thompson says the district was proud to showcase the new facility to the community.

“It’s amazing, I mean, just being able to showcase what has happened, what the community has done to help support the school in this endeavor,” Thompson says. “The facilities that these kids are gonna be able to participate in, it’s just top notch. And the process that Mr. Trosky, the high school principal has talked about, that he’s gone through the last about three years, it’s just unbelievable. We’re seeing the finish line right now.”

The gym seats 1,500 spectators, and includes an elevated media workspace, new locker rooms, trophy display case, and more.

Thompson says along with being a premier facility of the North Central Conference, the new gym will fill the need of allowing practices and other events to run simultaneously.

“Gym space is a big thing right now, and you have so many different activities going on and trying to give kids some of their freedom at night also. The more gym space you have, the more that you can get stuff done right after school or before school, not carry it on late at night. With our conference and different schools in the area, we feel it’s a top notch facility and we can showcase that for our students as well.”

The first event in the new gym will be Thursday when the volleyball team hosts West Fork, a match that’ll air on 104.9 KLMJ.
