Labor Day arrives Monday, a holiday that not only marks the unofficial end of summer but also celebrates the nation’s workforce. The first Labor Day was observed in 1882 in New York City as a parade honoring labor unions and their contributions to industry. It became a federal holiday in 1894, meant to recognize the economic and social achievements of American workers.
Today, the holiday is often celebrated less with marches and speeches and more with backyard barbecues, family gatherings, and one last summer getaway. As with most federal holidays, banks, post offices, schools, and many government offices will be closed.
OnTheGoMedia reminds listeners that our offices in Hampton and Parkersburg are closed on Labor Day and all holidays.
