Authorities have released new details about a Friday night pursuit that ended in a serious head-on crash near Hudson, injuring two people — including State Representative and Iowa State Trooper Joshua Meggers.
According to a press release from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, the chase began around 9 p.m. when deputies responded to reports of an intoxicated man at Casey’s in Grundy Center. The suspect, 24-year-old Cory DeVries of Grundy Center, fled at high speeds on gravel roads, at times exceeding 120 miles per hour. Multiple agencies pursued DeVries across Grundy and Black Hawk counties.
A Black Hawk County deputy deployed stop sticks near Highway 63 and Ranchero Road, but DeVries continued south on Highway 63, running on rims before crossing the centerline and colliding head-on with Meggers’ fully marked State Patrol SUV with lights activated.
Meggers was taken to MercyOne Waterloo with non-life-threatening injuries; DeVries was airlifted to Iowa City. Charges are pending.
