Livestock Requests Spur Code Review by Hampton Council

The Hampton City Council Tuesday held a workshop meeting and reviewed requests for livestock within city limits from Jennifer Gruelke, Mari Rodriguez and Sarah Kolb. All three were requesting to have poultry on their property.

The council discussed the pros and cons of approving the requests and also possible changes to Hampton’s code of ordinances. Hampton’s code of ordinances regarding livestock (Chapter 55) in city limits states, “It is unlawful for a person to keep livestock within the city except by written consent of the council or except in compliance with the city’s zoning regulations.”

Some council members stated if they approve the requests, it would open the door for more in the future. Some members of the council would like to look at the ordinance before making a permanent decision on the requests. The consensus was to discuss the matter further at a future workshop and that there would be no vote during Thursday’s regular meeting.

During Tuesday’s workshop, Alexis Grefe and Robyn Hansen requested to use the Hampton Fire Station as a host stop for the Wine Walk on November 28th. The council informed them there was no alcohol allowed in city buildings.

City Manager Ron Dunt presented a cost estimate to the council to update the city’s blight assessment. The estimate is for $6,500 and would require two days of field work. The council will discuss options during the budget process for the next fiscal year.
