October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and CG Public Health is encouraging residents to learn about their risk and schedule timely screenings.
According to the Iowa Cancer Registry, breast cancer has the highest incidence of all cancers in Iowa, accounting for a significant number of new diagnoses each year. CG Public Health officials say screening helps detect cancer earlier, when treatment is most effective.
The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for people ages 45 to 54 and every other year beginning at 55. Those at higher risk, such as people with a strong family history, should talk to their healthcare provider about earlier or additional screenings.
Care for Yourself coordinator Penny McCaslin says no one should skip screening because of cost. The program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible Iowans.
