The Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets and Hampton-Dumont-Cal cross country teams competed Tuesday night in their regular season finale at the North Central Conference Cross Country Meet in Algona.
The teams competed through a chilly and rainy contest as the Varsity races started there was a light rain falling and temperatures hovering around 53 degrees.
In the varsity girls race, Piper Smith clocked a time of 21:23 for the Cadets. Running the Algona course for the first time, she earned a medal with an eighth-place finish and says the rolling terrain made pacing a challenge.
“I’m good with uphills and downhills, but when they’re consistent like that it gets tricky,” Smith said. “I’d say the course is pretty challenging.”
For the Bulldogs, MacKenzy Valley finished 10th in the varsity girls race with a time of 21:43.
In the varsity boy’s race, Andrew Herrin earned a medal finishing in third-place with a time of 17:29 for the Cadets. Herrin says he’s pleased with his performance.
“I feel pretty good with the placement. I wanted to try to go for like in between that three to one range place-wise,” Herrin said. “I knew it was going to be very competitive, very hilly course, kind of chilly out. I knew things were going to be fast with how cold it was and stuff.”
For the Bulldogs, William Vosburg finished in 27th place turning in a time of 19:20.
Next up for both teams will be state qualifying meets which will take place on Oct. 22.
