The Mason City Fire Department responded to a structure fire Wednesday afternoon at 1601 6th Place SE.
Fire crews were called to the scene around 1:56 p.m. and arrived to find smoke coming from the roof of the building. Firefighters entered apartment 1B and located flames in the attic area, which were quickly extinguished after crews accessed the ceiling from a second-floor bathroom.
All occupants were able to evacuate safely on their own, and officials say smoke alarms helped alert the 911 caller to the fire.
Crews remained on scene until about 4:40 p.m. Alliant Energy and the Mason City Police Department assisted at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
