The AGWSR volleyball team had no problem taking care of business in Monday’s 3-0 sweep of Collins-Maxwell, as aired on 99 The Wave to begin the 1A Region 8 postseason. The set scores were 25-14, 25-10, 25-13. Jon Mohwinkle reports.

The Cougars were crisp in most aspects and minimized errors. Senior Brylea Metzgar had three straight kills to close the first set, bringing momentum into set 2. The Cougars had a 10-point run with Metzgar serving to take firm control and run away with the set. They scored the first nine points of set 3, and Metzgar recorded several more kills to finish the night.

Senior libero Elise Olson and freshman middle Hadley Bright say the team put it all together.

“Our chemistry tonight was just really good, and I think that we’ve been fighting the battle of not having a set rotation,” Olson says. “And tonight it really clicked, and soI thought that was our chemistry was what kind of carried us throughout the night.”

“We always say keep your engines revved,” Bright says. “I feel like once someone revved the engines, all the rest of them just started out, just kept on flowing.”

Metzgar finished with a team-high 12 kills, and Bright added eight.

Head Coach Kayla Miller says they were on point the entire night.

“It felt amazing, the girls really needed this today,” Miller says. “We knew going in that we just need to get our kills. We needed to play as a team. We needed to play aggressive and that’s exactly what we did. So taking a win with this was an amazing feeling tonight. Building off of energy when you have 10 consecutive serves in a row is an amazing feeling. They’re easy to just get hyped after that. You’re not making mistakes. You’re not getting down on yourself. You’re dominating. So the energy is always there after those kind of points.”

The team also recorded 10 service aces, including five by Claire Culver.

The Cougars have advanced to Wednesday’s regional quarterfinal at St. Edmond, which’ll air on 104.9 KLMJ.
