Hampton Mayor Steve Birdsall has vetoed a recently approved parking ordinance. At the Hampton City Council’s October 23rd meeting, the Council approved Ordinance 407 on a 4-2 vote. That measure was intended to amend Hampton Municipal Code to prohibit on-street parking on the 300 block of 3rd Avenue Southeast. This was part of a broader effort to establish new no-parking zones on both sides of 3rd Avenue Southeast between 3rd and 4th Streets, as well as on 3rd Street Southwest from Central Avenue West to 1st Avenue Southwest.

Before the council’s approval, City Manager Ron Dunt read a letter from resident Dustin Halverson opposing the changes. Halverson said he relies on street parking to accommodate his work truck and trailer. In his veto statement, Mayor Birdsall said he believes more discussion is needed to ensure the City has the right ordinance in place for the neighborhood.

Hampton City Manager Ron Dunt says the City Council will discuss the matter further at their next workshop meeting on Monday, November 10th.
