The Aplington-Parkersburg girls basketball team started the season strong in a 62-19 win at Hampton-Dumont-CAL Monday, as aired on 99 The Wave and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel.
The Falcons were crisp out of the gate and never trailed, scoring the game’s first eight points to take control. They jumped out to a 23-5 lead after a hot-shooting first quarter, then led 38-8 at halftime. Putting the running clock rule in effect early in the second half, the Falcons finished the game with relative ease and closed it out with the bench players on the court.
“Once we got the flow of things, I think we rattled off six or eight quick points, the press helps, turning them over and getting out and running a little bit,” Head Coach Brady Driscol says. “That’s where we missed some shots too. But as the game went on, I thought we settled down a little bit, got our feet under us, slowed ourselves down while still playing fast. So that was key, and then just kept it up for the rest of the game.”
Ava Eddy led with 13 points, Lorna Bernard had 12 and Kolbie Wangsness had 11. The team was 11/27 from three-point range.
Hampton-Dumont-CAL Coach Miranda Stafford says they’ll grow from the experience.
“Their pressure hurt us a little bit, but I’m proud of them, we drew something up and were able to make some adjustments,” Stafford says. “It’s just those fundamental things, passing the ball hard and anticipating where the defense is going to be, things like that. And it comes down to making shots. I thought we got some good looks and some good shots, but just didn’t shoot the ball well.”
MacKenzy Valley led the Bulldogs with eight points.
In their next action, the Falcons will host Sumner-Fredericksburg on Monday, December 1, and the Bulldogs will host Nevada on Tuesday, December 2.
