The Hampton-Dumont-CAL basketball teams split with Nevada at home in their first doubleheader of the season Tuesday. The girls won 42-24 and the boys lost 73-40.

In the girls game, the Bulldogs took a step offensively while playing lockdown defense. They outscored their effort from the previous game by halftime, holding the Cubs to just two points in the second quarter. They maintained the lead throughout the second half, closing the win in style. MacKenzy Valley led with 17 points and Madison Heilskov added 10, moving the Bulldogs to 1-1 ahead of Friday’s game at Clear Lake.

After nearly matching Nevada’s output in the first half, the boys were outscored 22-5 in the third quarter, falling into an insurmountable deficit. Surging to the finish, the Cubs prevented a comeback effort with a 23-12 margin in the fourth. The 0-1 Bulldogs will next compete at home against Dike-New Hartford on Tuesday, December 9.

Opening their season on the road, the boys wrestling team was defeated by Lake Mills 43-34. The Bulldogs got pins by Madox Strother at 113, Brody Strother at 138, Luke Showalter at 144 and Maddon Evans at 215. Emmett Elling won by injury default at 285 and Ryder Strother won a 13-3 major decision at 165. They’ll return to action at Friday’s Dan Gable Donnybrook Tournament at Xtream Arena.
